April 7th, 2008 by admin · 4 Comments

April 19, 2008

A bicycle tour of Arlington’s Central Library and six of the library’s seven branches takes place on Saturday, April 19 at 9:30 a.m. (Plaza Branch Library is not open on weekends.) Riders will start their ride on the Quincy Avenue side of Central Library. No pre-registration is required. The total circular route will cover some 29 miles but there will be options for a shorter excursion. Participants will receive a special Arlington Reads gift package. Due to the length of the ride, this activity is not recommended for children under the age of 12 unless accompanied by an adult. THIS EVENT WILL NOT BE HELD IN THE EVENT OF BAD WEATHER.

This sounds like an innovative way to promote bicycling for local trips, such as library visits. Whoever wrote the original announcement, however, seems unfamiliar with Arlington. For example, the Arlington Central Library is located on North Quincy STREET (there is no Quincy Avenue in Arlington), and Arlington has no “Plaza Branch” library, only a minor branch at COURTHOUSE PLAZA. I hope the routing and cue sheets for this bike ride will be more informed than this announcement, but I’m quite skeptical.

Their French is a little rusty too, but I left it as-is. We’ll forgive them though — this is indeed a great idea for promoting bicycling locally.

As usual, the devil is in the details. A bike ride developed by someone who is unfamiliar with both the local geography and the creation of navigatable cue sheets and who does not ride (and think) vehicularly may be of little benefit. The event description does say the route will follow designated trails and on-street bike routes, so perhaps the ride will have little or no sidewalk bicycling.

I live at Fort Belvoir. Is there a place to park my vehicle in that area. It would be too far of a bike ride from my place to ride to where the bike trip starts.
