What We Do

The Virginia Bicycling Federation (VBF) is a statewide advocacy organization working to change public policy and community attitudes, to improve the safety, convenience, and acceptance of bicycling, and promote bicycling for transportation, recreation, public health, and economic development.

Advocacy and Legislation

The Virginia Bicycling Federation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a volunteer Board working to make bicycling fun, safe, efficient, and accessible for people of all ages, abilities and skill levels.  Since 1980, VBF has been an effective voice in the Commonwealth creating greater awareness of bicycling and working to unite transportation professionals, elected officials, community advocates and citizens to support safe, enjoyable, and practical bicycling.

Education

VBF’s goal is to empower people to bicycle, reduce the number and severity of bicycle crashes, and increase acceptance of bicycling by educating the public on the benefits of bicycling, how to share the road with bicyclists, safe bicycling skills, and bicyclists’ needs for infrastructure and accommodations.  VBF makes education a priority and covers a number of educational topics on its Resource page.

Leadership and Communication

VBF activity is bringing Virginia bicycling advocates together and collaboratively developing a shared common agenda. VBF maintains an active listserv and regularly holds virtual meetings to coordinate the activities of bicycling advocates from throughout Virginia.

What We’ve Done

VBF has been working to accomplish much since its formation in 1980.  Below is a list of what we have done to improve the safety, convenience, and acceptance of bicycling in Virginia.
