On Feb. 1, 2023, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced $800 million in grant awards for 510 projects through the first round of funding for the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program.

The fiscal year 2022 awards include 473 Action Plan Grants, which are listed in this document by state, plus 37 Implementation Grants.

SS4A Action Plan Grants assist communities that do not currently have a roadway safety plan in place to reduce roadway fatalities, laying the groundwork for a comprehensive set of actions.  By contrast, the SS4A Implementation Grants provide funding to communities to build upon an existing roadway safety plan.  According to this USDOT announcement, this initial round of 473 Action Plan awards will improve roadway safety planning for over half the United States’ population.

Across Virginia, SS4A Action Plan grants have been awarded, in this initial funding round, to the 18 localities and regional planning bodies listed below; however, no SS4A Implementation Grants were awarded to any Virginia entity this year.  The total FY22 allocation throughout Virginia is just over $7 million.  If you live in one of these 18 localities or regions, be alert in the coming months for opportunities to participate in the development of the action plan for your area.
